Accessibility

Everyone should be able to find out about us, get in touch, and understand the support we offer — whatever their disability, device or way of communicating. Here is what we do to make that happen, and how to tell us when it is not working.

Our commitment

Accessibility is not an add-on for us; it is the whole point of the work. Social Skills Connect aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA, and to meet our obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth) and the NDIS Practice Standards, both on this website and in the way we deliver services.

What we have done on this site

  • a “skip to main content” link at the top of every page for keyboard and screen reader users;
  • everything can be reached and used with a keyboard alone, and focus is always visible;
  • proper headings, landmarks and labels so screen readers can make sense of each page;
  • text descriptions on meaningful images, and decorative graphics hidden from assistive technology;
  • text and background colours chosen for good contrast, and text that can be enlarged to 200% without breaking the layout;
  • plain, everyday language wherever we can;
  • the site works on phones, tablets and desktops, and there is no autoplaying video or sound;
  • the contact form has clear labels, error messages and confirmation, and works without a mouse.

What we know still needs work

We are honest about the gaps:

  • some blog images have descriptions that could be more detailed;
  • we do not yet offer Easy Read versions of every page — but see below, we can provide them on request;
  • we link to outside sites (the NDIS Commission, Facebook and others) whose accessibility we do not control.

We check the site regularly and fix problems as we find them.

Information in the format that suits you

Nothing on this website is the only way to get information from us. If you would prefer, we can provide anything here — and our service agreements, plans and reports — in another format, such as:

  • Easy Read or plain-language summaries;
  • large print;
  • a phone call or video call to talk it through;
  • a translated version, or a session with an interpreter;
  • visual supports, social stories or other communication supports that work for the participant.

Just ask. There is no charge for this.

Getting in touch in a way that works for you

  • Phone or text: 0402 413 847
  • Email: katherine@socialskillsconnect.com.au
  • If you are deaf, hard of hearing or have a speech impairment: contact us through the National Relay Service on 133 677, or visit accesshub.gov.au, and ask for 0402 413 847.
  • If English is not your first language: call the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS National) on 131 450 and ask them to call us. We can also arrange an interpreter for sessions and meetings.

Tell us if something is not working

If you hit a barrier on this site — a page that does not read well with your screen reader, text that is hard to see, a form that will not submit — please let us know. Tell us the page and what happened, and we will fix it as quickly as we can and get the information to you another way in the meantime.

If you feel we have not dealt with an accessibility concern properly, you can contact the Australian Human Rights Commission on 1300 656 419 or at humanrights.gov.au, or the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission on 1800 035 544 or at ndiscommission.gov.au.
